The Michigan Department of State does not publish how many questions its knowledge test has or the passing score, so each of our practice tests has 40 questions: a length we chose, not an official figure. About a quarter are road-sign questions because the real test has a separate Signs portion that you must also pass; our sign questions describe each sign's shape, color and symbol in words. The rest come from traffic laws, markings, signals and safe driving in chapters 4 to 7 of What Every Driver Must Know. Aim to get nearly every question right in both parts, since no official pass mark is published. Our tests are untimed and cannot reproduce the SOS question pool or the testing station.

Sample question from practice test 1

What does a downward-pointing triangle sign with a red border and the word YIELD require?

  1. Slow down and let vehicles crossing your path go by, stopping if needed
  2. Yield only to pedestrians, never to vehicles
  3. Always come to a full stop even when no one is coming
  4. Speed up to merge ahead of cross traffic

Answer A. The triangle shape means YIELD. The manual says to yield the right of way: slow down and let vehicles crossing your path go by, and be prepared to stop.

Which sign shape is used for SCHOOL signs?

  1. Vertical rectangle
  2. Octagon (eight sides)
  3. Pentagon (five sides)
  4. Round

Answer C. In the manual's nine basic shapes, the pentagon means SCHOOL. The octagon is STOP, the round sign is the railroad advance warning, and the vertical rectangle is for laws.

  • Michigan has no "DMV": driver licensing is handled by the Michigan Department of State, known as the Secretary of State (SOS). passmock is an independent practice resource and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the Michigan Department of State.
