Choosing a tutor or prep course

Nobody outside the test owner knows the real questions, and no tutor can guarantee a score. What a good tutor or course can do is find your weak sections and give you a plan. Questions worth asking before you pay:

  • Which version of the test do you teach? Formats change (sections, number of questions, timing). Compare what they say with the official description: ATI TEAS, HESI A2, CNA Written Exam (NNAAP), ASVAB, Life in the UK Test, CITB HS&E test (CSCS test).
  • Where do your practice questions come from? Prefer original questions or official study material. Be wary of anyone selling "real" or "leaked" test questions.
  • How do you find what I need to work on? A diagnostic test at the start, then a plan by section, is a good sign. You can take our free practice tests first and bring your weak sections to the first lesson.
  • What exactly is the price, and what if I stop? Get the total price, the number and length of sessions, and the cancellation and refund terms in writing.
  • Online or in person? Online is usually easier to fit around work or shifts; in person can help if you lose focus on a screen.

Driving lessons in Great Britain: check the instructor

  • Anyone you pay to teach you to drive must be a qualified and approved driving instructor (ADI) or a trainee driving instructor.
  • Instructors display a badge in their windscreen to prove they are registered with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA): green for a qualified instructor, pink for a trainee.
  • You can search the DVSA find driving instructors service. Instructors choose whether to be listed, so not all ADIs appear; for one who is not listed, contact DVSA with their name and ADI number.
  • Instructors set their own prices: there is no minimum or maximum cost, and no minimum number of lessons. Ask for the price of a lesson and its length before you book.
  • If lessons are shorter than agreed, keep being cancelled, or the instructor behaves inappropriately, you can complain to DVSA.
  • Northern Ireland has different rules for choosing an instructor.

Driving schools in the US: check the state license

Each state sets its own rules for driving schools and driver education, and licenses them through a state agency (in Texas, for example, driver education is regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation). Before you sign up:

  • Ask for the school's state license number and check it with the state agency.
  • If you are a teen, ask whether the course meets your state's driver education requirement for a permit or license.
  • Ask what is included (classroom hours, behind-the-wheel hours, use of the car for the road test) and get the total price in writing.
