New York permit practice tests written from the current official handbook, every answer explained.

What you get

  • 5 full-length practice tests of 20 questions, plus 20 extra practice questions — 120 questions in total, none of them on the free pages
  • Each practice test is made of:
    • Road signs: 4 questions
    • Rules of the road: 8 questions
    • Safe driving, alcohol and drugs: 8 questions
  • Every answer explained, with the rule, fact or method it checks and where to find it in the official material
  • Online test mode: optional timer, automatic score by section, then a review of your mistakes
  • Printable PDF with an answer key after each test
  • Instant access after payment, and a permanent access link by email

Each full-length practice test has 20 questions like the real one, with exactly 4 road-sign questions, and is scored the same way: 14 correct overall and at least 2 of the 4 sign questions. The DMV does not publish how the other 16 questions are split, so we draw 8 from rules of the road (signals, markings, right-of-way, emergency vehicles, turns, passing, school buses, parking) and 8 from safe driving (speed, space, seat belts, phones, alcohol and drugs, night and winter driving, emergencies, sharing the road). The DMV does not state a time limit, so our tests are untimed. We cannot reproduce the real test's question pool, the sign pictures shown on screen, or the office test station.

Sample question from practice test 1

What does a red and white triangular sign pointing downward, with the word YIELD, require?

  1. Always come to a full stop, then go
  2. Merge at the same speed without looking
  3. Slow down, be ready to stop, and give the right-of-way to vehicles and pedestrians; stop fully if traffic requires it
  4. Stop only for pedestrians, never for vehicles

Answer C. At a YIELD sign you decrease speed, prepare to stop and yield to vehicles and pedestrians in or heading toward the intersection. You must come to a full stop if traffic conditions require it.

You must stop at a STOP sign. There is no stop line, but there is a marked crosswalk. Where do you stop?

  1. In the middle of the crosswalk
  2. Before you enter the crosswalk
  3. Just past the crosswalk, where you can see
  4. At the edge of the intersection, after the crosswalk

Answer B. You must stop before the stop line if there is one; if not, you must stop before you enter the crosswalk.
