NCDMV does not publish how many questions its knowledge test has, so each of our practice tests has 25 questions: a length we chose, not an official figure. We score them with the official pass rule of 80% correct. About one question in four is a road-sign item: the real signs test is a separate test of 12 signs shown as pictures (9 correct needed for Class C), so our sign questions describe each sign's shape, color and symbol in words and ask what it means. Vision and road tests cannot be practiced on paper.

Sample question from practice test 1

What must an approved driver education course include before a teen can test for a limited learner permit?

  1. At least 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours behind the wheel
  2. 20 hours of classroom instruction and 10 hours behind the wheel
  3. 30 hours behind the wheel only
  4. An online course of 10 hours

Answer A. Drivers under 18 must present a certificate for an approved course of at least 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.

A red-and-white triangular sign with one point facing down means what?

  1. Slow down and yield the right of way, stopping if traffic requires it
  2. Stop completely every time, even if the road is clear
  3. The road narrows to one lane ahead
  4. Merge without checking traffic

Answer A. The yield sign tells you to slow down and yield. Whether you must stop depends on traffic on the intersecting street: if needed to avoid interfering with it, stop and wait.
