Each full-length practice test has 40 questions split like the real exam: a 20-question Road Signs part (signs, signals and pavement markings) and a 20-question Road Rules part, each scored separately with 15 of 20 needed to pass. DDS does not publish how the Road Rules questions are divided, so we draw 10 on traffic laws (right-of-way, passing, turns, parking, speed limits, school buses, railroad crossings, work zones, teen licensing and points) and 10 on safe driving (alcohol and DUI, seat belts, phones, night driving, emergencies, trucks and expressways, pedestrians, bicycles, motorcycles, crashes). DDS does not state a time limit, so our tests are untimed. We describe signs in words where the real test shows pictures, and we cannot reproduce the real question pool or the test computer at the Customer Service Center.

Sample question from practice test 1

Signs shaped as vertical rectangles are generally used for which kind of sign?

  1. Regulatory signs, which you must obey like traffic laws
  2. Guide signs showing destinations
  3. Warning signs for hazards
  4. Service signs for gas and food

Answer A. Vertical rectangle signs are generally regulatory signs that tell you what you must do, and you must obey them in the same manner as traffic laws.

Signs shaped as horizontal rectangles are generally used for:

  1. Stop and yield instructions
  2. Railroad crossings
  3. School zones
  4. Guide signs showing locations, directions or other special information

Answer D. Horizontal rectangle signs are generally used as guide signs: they show locations, directions or other special information.
