Each full-length practice test has 35 questions like the real one, with exactly 15 road-sign questions; some show a standard sign drawing and others describe the sign in words. The Secretary of State does not publish how the other 20 questions are split, so we draw 10 from rules of the road (signals, pavement markings, right of way, passing, school buses, railroad crossings, parking, speed limits, permits) and 10 from safe driving (alcohol and drugs, following distance, weather, emergencies, sharing the road, belts and phones, crashes and equipment). The passing standard comes from the Illinois Administrative Code (80%, so 28 of 35), not from the handbook; no time limit is published, so our tests are untimed. The Secretary of State grades the real exam. We cannot reproduce the real question pool or the testing station.

Sample question from practice test 1

A STOP sign has a small plaque underneath reading ALL-WAY. Who goes first?

  1. The driver on the left
  2. The driver on the widest road
  3. The driver going straight
  4. The first driver to stop

Answer D. ALL-WAY means traffic from every direction must stop. The first driver to stop is the first to go; the others wait their turn.

What must you do at a red and white triangular sign pointing down?

  1. Slow down, stop if necessary, and let all vehicles and pedestrians go before proceeding
  2. Stop completely every time, even if the road is clear
  3. Speed up to merge ahead of traffic
  4. Give way only to pedestrians

Answer A. The three-sided YIELD sign means you give the right of way to all vehicles and pedestrians. Slow to a safe speed and stop if necessary.
