The department publishes a format only for the online knowledge test for ages 15 to 17 (30 questions, 60 minutes, 80% to pass); it does not publish the question count, time limit or passing score of the test taken at a Driver Services Center. Each full-length practice test therefore follows the online test: 30 questions, a 60-minute limit and 80% (24 correct) to pass. The manual says the test is roughly one quarter each traffic signs and signals, safe driving principles, rules of the road, and drugs and alcohol, so we draw 8 questions on signs, signals and markings, 7 on rules of the road and 15 on safe driving, alcohol and drugs (about half of them on alcohol and drugs). We cannot reproduce the real test question pool, the sign pictures shown on screen or the testing conditions.

What does an orange background on a road sign mean?
- Motorist services such as gas and food

Answer D. Orange is the background color for construction and maintenance signs and is not used for any other purpose. Blue is for motorist services, fluorescent yellow-green for school zones and brown for recreation areas.
Fluorescent yellow-green signs are used for:
- School zones and other pedestrian areas such as crosswalks
- Interstate exits
- Incident management at crash scenes
- Hospitals and police stations
Answer A. The manual calls fluorescent yellow-green the color for school zones; it is also used in other pedestrian areas such as crosswalks because it is easy to see in low light, fog and rain.
