What you get

  • 3 full-length practice tests of 40 questions, plus 40 extra practice questions — 160 questions in total, none of them on the free pages
  • Each practice test is made of:
    • Part one: traffic signs: 10 questions
    • Part two: rules of the road: 15 questions
    • Part two: safe driving: 15 questions
  • Every answer explained, with the rule, fact or method it checks and where to find it in the official material
  • Online test mode: optional timer, automatic score by section, then a review of your mistakes
  • Printable PDF with an answer key after each test
  • Instant access after payment, and a permanent access link by email

Each full-length practice test has 40 questions in the official two-part structure: 10 traffic sign questions that must all be correct, then 30 general knowledge questions where you need 24 correct. The DMV does not publish how the 30 general knowledge questions are split, so we draw 15 from rules of the road (signals, markings, right-of-way, speed, turning, passing, parking, permits) and 15 from safe driving (space cushion, sharing the road, weather, distraction, alcohol, seat belts, crashes). The DMV does not state a time limit, so our tests are untimed. We cannot reproduce the real question pool, the sign pictures on the DMV screen, or the rule that stops the test after part one.

Sample question from practice test 1

What must you do at a downward-pointing triangular sign?

  1. Always come to a full stop, even when no one is near
  2. Speed up so you can merge ahead of other traffic
  3. Slow down, be prepared to stop and let vehicles, pedestrians or bicyclists pass safely before you proceed
  4. Give way only to pedestrians, never to vehicles

Answer C. The triangle is the yield sign. You must slow down as you come to the intersection, be prepared to stop, and let any vehicles, pedestrians or bicyclists safely pass before you proceed.

A plaque under a STOP sign reads ALL WAY. You and a driver on your right reach the intersection at the same time. Who goes first?

  1. The driver on your right; the driver on the left must yield
  2. You do, because you are on the left
  3. Whichever vehicle is larger
  4. Whichever driver is going straight

Answer A. At an all-way stop every vehicle must stop. If you arrive at the same time as other vehicles, the driver on the left must yield to the driver on the right.
