Who it is for

  • CDL learner permit holders who have finished, or are finishing, entry-level driver training and have a skills test to book
  • Drivers who passed the pre-trip inspection practice and now need the backing exercises and the road test
  • Drivers who failed the basic control or road test once and want to know exactly what is scored
  • Class A and Class B applicants (the backing diagrams use a tractor-trailer; the rules are the same for a straight truck or bus)
  • Non-native English speakers who want the examiner's words explained in short sentences (the test itself is in English only)

Who it is not for

  • A replacement for behind-the-wheel training: the federal rules require it before a first Class A or B skills test, and only practice in a truck builds the skill
  • The pre-trip vehicle inspection: see our CDL Pre-Trip Inspection Guide
  • The knowledge (permit) tests: see our CDL permit tests study guide
  • Anyone looking for a guaranteed point table for every state: most states do not publish one, and this guide says so

Questions before you buy

Isn't all of this in my state CDL manual for free?

The rules are, and you should read your manual. Most manuals give the basic control and road test in a few pages with no numbers. This guide puts both versions of the test side by side, shows the free pull-ups and looks for each exercise, redraws the course with its dimensions, adds the backing and turning rules from the rest of the manual, the published pass lines and automatic failures, and gives you practice score sheets and 60 explained questions.

Does it tell me the exact points for each error?

No, because the states we read do not publish them: the scores come from an examiner manual that is not public. The guide gives every pass line a state does publish (New York, Utah, California) and teaches you to aim at zero errors.

My state uses the modernized test. Is the guide still useful?

Yes. Chapter 3 is entirely about the modernized course (forward stop, straight line backing, forward offset tracking, reverse offset backing), with the course dimensions from New Jersey and the rules from Pennsylvania, Oregon, Washington and Massachusetts. The road test chapters apply to both versions.

Can a PDF teach me to back a trailer?

No, only practice in a truck can. The guide tells you what the examiner scores, the manual's backing rules and a practice method with score sheets, so every practice session counts. Use it with your instructor.

How is it different from your pre-trip inspection guide?

The pre-trip guide covers the first part of the skills test, the vehicle inspection. This guide covers the two parts that follow: basic control and the road test. They do not repeat each other.

Are the questions from the real test?

No. The skills test has no written questions. Our 60 questions are original, written from the sources in the guide, to check you know the rules behind the maneuvers.

Is it a subscription?

No. It is a one-off payment for a PDF you keep, on your phone or printed.
