Each full-length practice test is the set of three knowledge tests a Class A applicant with air brakes takes: 50 General Knowledge, 25 Air Brakes and 20 Combination Vehicles questions, the lengths Washington and Utah publish. Score each test on its own: you need 80% on each (40, 20 and 16 correct). It is untimed because federal rules and the state pages we checked set no time limit. Our questions are original, written from the state CDL manuals and federal regulations, and use four answer choices where real state tests use three. They cannot reproduce your state's own question pool, its test length or rules if they differ, the skills test, or endorsement tests such as Hazmat, Tank, Doubles/Triples, Passenger and School Bus.

Sample question from practice test 1

A tractor pulls a trailer with a GVWR of 14,000 pounds, and the combination has a GCWR of 40,000 pounds. Which CDL group covers this vehicle?

  1. Class B (heavy straight vehicle)
  2. Class C (small vehicle)
  3. No CDL group, because the trailer alone is under 26,001 pounds
  4. Class A (combination vehicle)

Answer D. Group A is any combination with a GCWR of 26,001 pounds or more when the towed unit has a GVWR over 10,000 pounds. Both conditions are met here, so the trailer's own weight being under 26,001 pounds does not matter.

A straight truck with a GVWR of 33,000 pounds tows a small trailer with a GVWR of 8,000 pounds. Which CDL group covers this vehicle?

  1. Class A, because the GCWR is over 26,000 pounds
  2. Class C, because the trailer is light
  3. Class B, because the towed unit is not over 10,000 pounds GVWR
  4. No CDL is needed for a truck towing a light trailer

Answer C. Group B is a single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, including when it tows a vehicle of 10,000 pounds GVWR or less. Class A needs a towed unit with a GVWR over 10,000 pounds, which this trailer does not have.
