Two short steps: your exam and what you need, then how to reach you. Free for you, no obligation; passmock itself does not teach. Prefer to prepare alone? See our practice pack or take the free practice test.
The short answer
There is no single "best" HESI A2 course, because there is no single HESI A2. Elsevier offers seven academic exams (Grammar, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and General Knowledge, Basic Math Skills, Anatomy and Physiology, Biology and Chemistry), and programs can give all seven or only the ones they choose. Any money you spend on an exam you will not sit is wasted.
A sensible order, cheapest first:
- Free: ask your program which exams you take and what score it needs, then use free textbooks and free questions to find your weak exam.
- About $30 to $46: Elsevier's review book, written by the test maker, with practice exams on its companion website.
- A course, a class or a tutor: only if you need the math or the science taught to you, not just more questions.
- Timed practice at the end: at least one run of your required exams under Elsevier's estimated times.
How to turn this into a week-by-week plan is in our free HESI A2 study guide; this page only compares what you can use and what it costs.
What you can get free
- Your program's own information. It decides which exams you take and the score it requires, and it can switch the on-screen calculator on or off (Elsevier Faculty Guide). Many programs also tell applicants which review material they accept or lend.
- Free textbooks for the science exams. OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology 2e is free to read online, as are its Biology 2e and Chemistry 2e books. Use them when a review book explanation is too short.
- Our free HESI A2 questions, every answer explained, one page per exam: math, reading, vocabulary, grammar, anatomy and physiology, biology and chemistry, or all of them from the HESI A2 practice test page.
On 22 October 2026 we did not find a free HESI A2 practice test sold or given to applicants on Elsevier's public sites. If you are told one exists, check with your program that it is Elsevier's, not a third-party product using the name.
Elsevier's own prep: prices checked on 22 October 2026
Elsevier writes the HESI A2 and publishes one review book for it. Formats and prices below are as shown on Elsevier's US health store and on Elsevier's book page on 22 October 2026; check them again before you buy.
| Elsevier product | Price | What Elsevier says it includes |
|---|---|---|
| Admission Assessment Exam Review, 6th edition (March 26, 2024), print | $45.99 | Chapters on mathematics, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, biology, chemistry and anatomy and physiology; a 25-question pre-test and a 50-question post-test; comprehensive practice exams with over 200 questions, with rationales, on the Evolve companion website |
| Same book, VitalSource eBook | $42.99 list, shown at $30.09 on 22 October 2026 | The same content in digital form |
| Admission Assessment Exam Review, 5th edition (January 24, 2020) | Not priced on Elsevier's page | The same subjects plus a chapter on physics, which the 6th edition dropped |
Elsevier's white paper calls the review book "a useful resource for applicants to prepare for the A2 or improve their scores". If your program lists physics, the 5th edition is the only Elsevier review of that topic; otherwise get the 6th.
If you have already taken the exam: your program can switch on remediation, which sends personalized study content for every concept where you scored below a benchmark it sets (Faculty Guide), and Elsevier suggests applicants use remediation content before repeat testing. Use that before buying anything else: it is built from your own results.
Prep courses, classes and tutors
A course is worth paying for when you need teaching, not only practice: for example if you have not studied chemistry or algebra for years. Before paying, ask your program whether it runs or recommends a HESI A2 review, check that the course covers exactly the exams on your list, and ask whether it uses Elsevier's current section list (no physics unless your program requires it).
A one-to-one tutor costs more per hour but works only on the exam that pulls your composite down. Our page on tutors for nursing entrance exams explains what to check, and finding a tutor lets you send one free request to partner tutors.
Where our pack fits
Our practice pack does one thing the review book does not: it gives you every academic exam at full length, timed, in one sitting, so you can check your pacing before test day.
- What it is: 1 full practice exam of 310 questions covering all seven academic exams (55 questions each for math, reading, vocabulary and grammar, 30 each for anatomy and physiology, biology and chemistry), timed with Elsevier's estimated times (285 minutes in all), every answer explained, online with a score by section and as a PDF. If your program gives fewer exams, take only those sections.
- What it costs: $17, one payment, no subscription, instant access. See what is inside the HESI A2 pack.
- What it is not: our questions are original, written from Elsevier's published exam descriptions. They are not Elsevier questions, physics is not included, and our score is a percentage of correct answers, not a HESI score.
If you are preparing for several tests, PassMock Unlimited costs $19 a month (the first month is $1.90 with the launch offer) and gives access to every US practice pack and study guide on passmock. It renews monthly until you cancel, and you can cancel online at any time: see PassMock Unlimited.
