ASVAB prep: every option compared (free and paid)

The official ASVAB program recommends no paid course or study guide. Its own list is short and free: school-level math, English and science, the official sample questions and practice on asvabprogram.com, and the Army's March 2 Success. Start there, and pay only for what the free material shows you are missing.

The short answer

There is no official "best ASVAB prep". The ASVAB Enlistment Testing Program says in its test preparation disclaimer that it does not give real test questions to any prep service, does not endorse paid programs that guarantee passing scores and does not recommend any commercial course or study guide. So the right choice depends on you: which subtests pull your AFQT down, and how long you have before your test date.

A sensible order, cheapest first:

  1. Free: the official sample questions, free practice on asvabprogram.com, March 2 Success and the Army's ASVAB Challenge app, to find your weak subtests.
  2. A low one-off cost: a set of full-length timed practice tests or a study guide aimed at your weak area, usually the math.
  3. A tutor: if you need someone to explain the math or reading to you, not only more questions.
  4. The Army's Future Soldier Preparatory Course: only if you have already tested and your score is in the range the Army accepts for it (see below).

Which subtests matter and how to plan the weeks is in our free ASVAB study guide; this page compares the ways to get the material.

What you can get free

  • Official sample questions. The sample questions page on officialasvab.com shows sample questions for each of the 10 subtests. It is a preview of the question style, not a timed practice test.
  • asvabprogram.com. The disclaimer page names the student area of asvabprogram.com for free ASVAB practice tests and sample questions. If you are in high school, the same site runs the ASVAB Career Exploration Program, which is free of charge to participating schools; ask your school counselor whether your school takes part.
  • March 2 Success. A free online program sponsored by the U.S. Army, with self-paced math, English and science courses and practice tests. It lists the ASVAB among the tests it supports. You must register to get access.
  • The U.S. Army ASVAB Challenge app. goarmy.com names this free app, on the Apple App Store and Google Play, as a way to get familiar with the test topics.
  • Your recruiter. Recruiters cannot help you study, but they set up your test appointment, explain how scoring works and connect you to resources. They can also give you an access code for the AFQT Predictor Test: 20 items, generally 20 to 30 minutes, online. Only the recruiter sees the score, and the official page warns it is not a guarantee of your ASVAB score.
  • Your school books and public library. The program's only course advice is a solid core of math, English and science in high school or college; a high school algebra book and a basic science text cover much of that. Your local library may also lend ASVAB study books.
  • Our free questions, one page per AFQT subtest, every answer explained: Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension and Mathematics Knowledge, plus the technical subtests such as General Science.

Official and government programs

The test is written by the U.S. Department of Defense, so the closest thing to official material is what it publishes for free: the sample questions and the preparation advice. That advice is worth reading before you buy anything, because the best strategy depends on the version you take. On the paper-and-pencil test you should answer every question; on the computer-adaptive CAT-ASVAB you cannot go back, and the page warns that several wrong answers at the end of a subtest carry a relatively large penalty, so random guessing does not pay.

If you have already tested and your score is too low, the Army has its own course. According to goarmy.com:

  • the Army requires an ASVAB score of at least 31 to enlist;
  • with a minimum score of 21, you may enter the academic track of the Future Soldier Preparatory Course, a 90-day program covering all the subjects on the ASVAB, with opportunities to retake the test;
  • with a score of 31 to 49, you may qualify for a shorter version, with 30 days of classes and one chance to improve your score;
  • your recruiter tells you which option fits you.

This is an Army program for people in the enlistment process, not something you can sign up for on your own. Minimum scores for the other branches are in our ASVAB score by branch guide.

Study guides, courses and tutors

Books and courses that cover all 10 subtests are thorough, and long to work through. Before paying for any of them, remember the official warning: no book, course or app has real ASVAB questions, and anyone claiming to sell them is making false and misleading claims. Be wary of any paid service that promises a guaranteed score.

A one-to-one tutor costs more per hour but works only on what you need, which for most candidates means the two math subtests of the AFQT. Our page on ASVAB tutors lists what to check before you pay and lets you send one free request to partner tutors.

Where our pack fits

Our products do the thing the free material does least: let you sit full-length, timed tests on the AFQT subtests and see every answer worked out.

  • AFQT Practice Pack for the ASVAB (details): 2 full practice tests of 105 questions on the four AFQT subtests (Arithmetic Reasoning 30, Word Knowledge 35, Paragraph Comprehension 15, Mathematics Knowledge 25), timed at 84 minutes like the paper-and-pencil AFQT subtests, with worked answers, online and as a printable PDF. $15, one payment.
  • Math Study Guide for the ASVAB (details): a no-calculator course for Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge, with 148 original practice problems, a full-length paper-format test, a formula sheet and a 6-week plan, as a PDF. $19, one payment.
  • What they are not: our questions are original, not ASVAB questions. Our tests are fixed forms, not adaptive like the CAT-ASVAB, and they give a percentage correct, not an AFQT percentile. The pack does not cover General Science or the technical subtests.

If you are preparing for more than one test, PassMock Unlimited gives access to every US practice pack and study guide on passmock for $19 a month (the first month is $1.90 with the launch offer). It renews monthly until you cancel, and you can cancel online at any time. Details on the PassMock Unlimited page.
